Add a Penny to Your Quilt: Adding a Touch of Time — Have you ever thought about incorporating a little piece of history into your quilt? Adding a current year penny is a unique and meaningful way to do just that. It's a small detail that can add a big impact to your finished project.

Recently saw a Facebook post on American Patchwork and Quilting Facebook post about adding a Penny in thier quilt.

When I’m assembling a quilt as a gift, I make a small pocket from the label and insert a shiny penny dated the year of the gift. It makes me feel like I am also giving the recipient good luck and prosperity.

Plus, you just recently posted about making sure you tag your quilts, so people in the future knows who quilted it.

Why Add a Penny?

  • Time capsule: A penny is a tangible piece of the present, capturing the year your quilt was made.
  • Luck and prosperity: Pennies are often associated with good luck and financial abundance, making them a charming addition.
  • Personal touch: It’s a personal touch that sets your quilt apart from others.
    How to Incorporate a Penny
There are several ways to include a penny in your quilt:
  • Appliqué: Create a simple design around the penny, such as a coin purse or a lucky charm.
  • Free-motion quilting: Stitch intricate designs around the penny for a visually interesting effect.
  • Pocket addition: Sew a small pocket into your quilt and place the penny inside.
  • Fabric wrapping: Wrap the penny in fabric and stitch it securely to your quilt.
    Tips for Success
  • Clean the penny: Before incorporating it into your quilt, make sure the penny is clean to prevent any discoloration.
  • Protect the penny: Consider sealing the penny with a clear coat of sealant to protect it from oxidation.
  • Secure it well: Ensure the penny is securely attached to prevent it from shifting or falling out.

Adding a penny to your quilt is a fun and creative way to make your project even more special. It’s a small gesture that can bring joy and nostalgia for years to come.

Adding a penny to the quilt you make can add an Easter Egg element. Quilting artist always hide hidden things in their quilts. An Easter Egg is a hidden item. Almost like finding the old “Where’s Waldo?”

I think I might try to do this for the quilts I complete.

Have you ever added a penny to a quilt?
