I prefer bow ties over neck ties. However, I do not always wear them. I do have a few plain ones and some that I had made for me. I even got married in a bow tie I got on clearance at a store.

Originating in the 17th century, bow ties were initially worn by Croatian mercenaries who fought for the French army during the Thirty Years’ War. French soldiers admired the Croatian soldiers’ neckwear, which was a scarf tied around their necks, and adopted the style themselves. Over time, the scarf evolved into the bow tie we know today, and it became a popular accessory for formal occasions.

One of the great things about bow ties is that they come in a variety of styles and materials. For a formal event, a classic black satin bow tie is a perfect choice. It adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to a tuxedo or suit. For a more casual look, a cotton or linen bow tie in a fun print or pattern can be a great addition to a button-down shirt and blazer.

When it comes to tying a bow tie, there are a few different methods, but the most common is the “self-tie” method. This involves tying the bow yourself, which can be a bit tricky at first, but with practice, it becomes second nature. There are also pre-tied bow ties, which are a great option for those who are short on time or simply prefer the convenience of a pre-tied bow. I use pre-tied bow ties personally.

Bow ties are not just for men, either. Women have been incorporating bow ties into their outfits for years, and they are a great way to add a touch of masculine edge to a feminine look. A silk bow tie worn with a blazer and jeans is a great way to achieve a sophisticated yet casual look. Or even as a hair accessory (continue reading).

In recent years, bow ties have become a popular accessory for weddings. Grooms and groomsmen often opt for bow ties instead of traditional neckties to add a touch of elegance to their attire. Bow ties also make great gifts for groomsmen or as a way to show appreciation for a friend or family member.

The History of Bow Ties

The origins of the bow tie can be traced back to the 17th century, where Croatian mercenaries used a scarf around their necks to keep the collar of their shirts closed. The French quickly adopted this style and called it a “cravat.” Over time, the cravat evolved into the modern-day necktie. The bow tie, on the other hand, remained a separate entity and gained popularity in the 19th century as a formal accessory.

The bow tie was a staple in men’s formalwear until the 1960s when it fell out of favor, and the necktie took center stage. However, in recent years, the bow tie has made a comeback, with more men opting for this classic accessory to add some personality to their formal attire.

How to Tie a Bow Tie

Tying a bow tie can seem intimidating at first, but with some practice, it can become second nature. Here is a step-by-step guide to tying a bow tie:

  1. Start with the bow tie draped around your neck, with the right end slightly longer than the left.
  2. Cross the longer end over the shorter end, creating a loop.
  3. Bring the longer end up and over the loop, creating a second loop.
  4. Fold the shorter end in half and place it over the center of the two loops.
  5. Hold the folded end in place and pull the longer end down through the loop behind the center of the bow. 6. Tighten the knot by pulling on the folded end and adjusting the bow to your desired size.

Choosing the Perfect Bow Tie

  1. When choosing a bow tie, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, consider the occasion. For formal events, opt for a classic black or white bow tie. For more casual events, experiment with bold patterns and colors.
  2. Next, consider the fabric. Silk is the most common material for bow ties, but other options such as cotton, wool, and linen can work well too. Just make sure the fabric complements the rest of your outfit.
  3. Finally, make sure the size of the bow tie is proportionate to your body type. A larger bow tie will suit a taller person, while a smaller bow tie will suit a shorter person.

The Bow Tie Hair Accessory

Bow tie hair accessories are a fun and trendy way to incorporate the classic style of a bow tie into your everyday look. These accessories can be worn in a variety of ways, from a classic bow on the top of your head to a more subtle bow on the side of a ponytail.

Bow tie hair accessories come in a range of materials, including silk, cotton, and even velvet. They also come in different sizes and colors, allowing you to find the perfect bow tie to match your outfit.

To wear a bow tie hair accessory, start by pulling your hair into the desired style. You can wear the bow tie at the top of your head for a playful look or on the side of a low ponytail for a more sophisticated style. Once you have positioned the bow tie, secure it in place with bobby pins.

Bow tie hair accessories are a versatile and affordable way to add a touch of elegance to your everyday look. They are perfect for adding some personality to your workwear or for dressing up a casual outfit. Whether you opt for a classic silk bow or a bold patterned bow, these accessories are sure to make a statement.

One church I went to when several of us had bow ties on … we called it the bow tie club. No, none of us planned it, but one of the deacons there did wear one often.

In conclusion, bow ties are a classic and timeless accessory that have stood the test of time. Whether you’re dressing up for a formal event or adding a touch of sophistication to a casual look, a bow tie is a versatile accessory that is sure to impress. With so many styles and materials to choose from, there’s a bow tie out there for everyone.

I do not sew bow ties but B.Allen’s Bow Ties and More does and I highly recommend them. As that is where I have got most of mine! So go and buy your bow ties from them! Brent wears them all the time.

Another guy I know, a lawyer, wears bow ties all the time too, told me he knew a guy that turned all of his neck ties into bow ties. Not sure who he used.

I gave them some of my fabric and also paid for each one to be made too.
