I have complied a list of types of masks that we will or may come across as more and more mask mandates are being in place.

N95 Respirators Masks

N95 Respirators Not for Use by the General Public. These are usually known as Particulate Respirator Type N95. These are said to filter out 95% of airborne particles. These are usually tight fitted. A seal check usually is performed.

Surgical Masks / Disposable Masks

Surgical Masks / Disposable Masks - As the name fits, this is the mask that is usually in the medical field. Usually loose fitting. This type of mask does NOT provide the wearer with a reliable level of protection from inhaling smaller airborne particles and is not considered respiratory protection. This type of mask is also disposable and discarded after each patient encounter.

Usually made of paper or other type material such as Nonwoven fabric is a fabric-like material made from staple fibre (short) and long fibres (continuous long), bonded together by chemical, mechanical, heat or solvent treatment.

These are the type of masks usually worn year round in most Asian countries.

Cloth Masks

Handamde Face Masks (Cloth Masks)

These are the ones that you see sold online, such as this site. The should be made with 100% cotton. They can be reused by washing them. Usually cloth masks, are made with at least one layer of fabric. In some cases, people will make multiple layers.

The Ones that SteveZ MaskZ, has the front layer (the design layer and the back layer, usually a solid color). It also has a slit in the back to be able to apply a filter if needed.

Some cloth masks have a filter pocket, while others do not.

Cloth masks may help to prevent virus if used properly. Check out what The Mayo Clinic says this about cloth masks …

Face masks combined with other preventive measures, such as frequent hand-washing and social distancing, help slow the spread of the virus.

Cloth masks come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, designs and more!

Filtering Respirators Masks

Filtering Respirators Masks These are similar to the N95 Masks, as described above. But these are much bulkier and have filters usually on the sides. These filters need to be changed on a regular basis. Usually used in construction or where harsh chemicals are used. This is form fitting too and usually has a seal to the users face.

Firefighters use a similar type of device. Sometimes these devices are hooked up to a oxygen tank like that of the firefighter and the scuba diver.

Other names can be:

  • EscapeRespirators (Escape Respirators or Escape Hoods)
  • Chemical Cartridge Respirator
  • Gas Mask
  • Power Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR)
  • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).

Ayurvedic Masks

Ayurvedic Masks This is a topical mask. Usually used with herbs, creams, lotions, charcoal, etc. This one won't cover your mouth or nose, so not one to use for the pandemic. But one that could help your skin. Also known as a facial mask.
