National Sew a Jelly Roll Day
You can sew all kinds of things with a jelly roll, one of the most common is a quilt. 
What is a jelly roll of fabric?
In order to celebrate National Sew A Jelly Roll Day, we need to know what a jelly roll is.
Jelly rolls – precut fabric rolled in a bundle. Very popular for quilting or other sewing projects.
A Jelly Roll has 2½ inch tall by the width of the fabric in strips of fabric that are rolled together to resemble a rolled pastry. With the colors looking like jelly layers.
Often they have matching or coordinating fabric strips rolled as one bundle. Most often cut right from the bolt of fabric.
You can buy these at big retail fabric stores (JoAnn’s Fabric’s, Walmart, Etc.) and local fabric stores too.
When do we celebrate National Jelly Roll Day?
It is celebrated the Third Saturday of September each year, during National Sewing Month. I am not sure who started this holiday or when. However, Moda fabrics seem to promote it the most. So my guess is they started this holiday, but I’m not sure when.
They call it Project Jelly Roll and the purpose is to sew with a Moda brand Jelly Rolls.

- 2026 – September 19th
- 2027 – September 18th
Some fun facts about Jelly Rolls from Moda…
-There are (40) 2 1/2″ by width of fabric (WOF) strips in a Moda Jelly Roll. (Other manufacturers pretty much follow this industry standard but not always. And smaller rolls are becoming popular; example 20 strips.)
-Jelly Roll is a trade marked product name by Moda Fabric. (No other manufacturer can use the name Jelly Roll. That is why other manufacturers have come up with their own names, example: Roll-Up, Sushi Roll, Rolli Polli, Double Scoops, Karats, Strip Roll, and Strip Pack.). Some manufacturers call them fabric rolls.
-The very first Jelly Roll was created in 2006.
-You can cut (16) 2 1/2″ square from a Jelly Roll strip.
-A Jelly Roll is equivalent to approximately 2 3/4 yards of fabric.
-It takes 38 Jelly Rolls to make a mile (5,280 feet).
-Moda rolls and ties each Jelly Roll by hand.
-There is the same amount of yardage in a Jelly Roll as in a Layer Cake (10″ squares). (Blog post coming soon on fabric sizes)
