National Quilting Day

This quilting holiday has been celebrated since 1992 by the National Quilting Association in 1991 from a resolution at the 22and Annual Show in Lincoln, Nebraska, on June 1991.

Held on the Third Saturday in March. That makes 2024, National Quilting Day on March 16.

The Whole month of March is Quilting Month.

National Quilting Day is a special occasion that unites quilters and fabric enthusiasts from around the globe. It’s a day dedicated to recognizing the skill, creativity, and dedication that goes into every stitch of a quilt.

This year, 2024, National Quilting Day falls on March 16, and there’s no better time to explore the rich tapestry of this beloved craft.

The History of National Quilting Day

The tradition of quilting dates back thousands of years, with the earliest known example being a quilted floor covering found in a Mongolian cave, dating between 100 B.C. and 200 A.D. In the United States, quilting became popular in the late 17th century, initially as a pastime for the wealthy. Today, it has evolved into a vibrant community activity enjoyed by millions.

National Quilting Day itself began in 1991, initiated by the National Quilting Association. It was first celebrated as Quilters Day Out in Kentucky in 1989, and due to its popularity, it quickly transformed into a national, and then international, celebration¹².

Display Your Quilts

One of the most delightful ways to celebrate is by displaying your quilts. Whether you hang them outside your home or showcase them in a window, sharing your work can inspire and comfort others. Don’t forget to label your quilts to preserve their stories and use the hashtag #nationalquiltingday to share your displays on social media¹.

Join a Quilting Group

Quilting is more fun when shared. Join a local quilting group or guild and participate in group projects. Many groups organize special events for National Quilting Day, offering a great opportunity to learn new techniques and meet fellow quilters.

Document Your Quilts

Take the time to document your quilts. Add labels with details about the quilt’s creation, the story behind it, and any other relevant information. This not only adds value to your work but also preserves the history of quilting for future generations¹.

Give Back

Consider participating in charity quilting projects. Many quilters create and donate quilts to hospitals, shelters, and other organizations in need. National Quilting Day is an excellent time to start or contribute to such a meaningful cause.

Learn and Share

If you’re new to quilting, use this day to start learning about this craft. If you’re an experienced quilter, share your knowledge with others. Workshops, tutorials, and quilting bees are fantastic ways to spread the joy of quilting.

Conclusion

National Quilting Day is more than just a celebration of quilts; it’s a celebration of community, history, and artistry. Whether you’re a seasoned quilter or just starting, take a moment to appreciate the beauty and warmth that quilts bring into our lives. Happy quilting!

Future Dates

  • 2024 – March 16
  • 2025 – March 15

Currently there are no congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day at the time of this posting.

I have done the front of my first quilt, just need to finish it. I’ve even started a second one.

Do you quilt?

If you quilt, feel free to share something about quilting for those who are like me and going to start to try to make my first quilt.
