National Sewing Machine Day

I did not come up with holiday! This holiday honors that invention that we use to sew things, like I use to make face masks and other products here at Steve Sews Stuff

Skilled cabinet-maker and English inventor, Thomas Saint, received the first patent for a design of a sewing machine in 1790. His design was intended for leather and canvas. However, he never advertised it and no evidence of the design, other than his drawings, could be found. In 1874, William Newton Wilson found Saint’s drawings in the London Patent Office. With some minor adjustments, Wilson built a working model. The London Science Museum currently owns Wilson’s model.

National Day Calendar

This day is held annually on June 13th, August 12th & September 10.

The one on September 10th is often called Sew Be It Day. As Sew Be It Day commemorates September 10, 1846, the day on which Elias Howe was awarded the first American patent on a sewing machine.

No idea of when this holiday was started or by whom. If you know, let Steve Sews Stuff know, so we can give proper credit.

Did you know the Disney movie Cruella features Singer sewing machines, especially some older models.
