I believe on July 3, 1994, I had my board of review. However, my certificate is dated July 5, 1994. It is hard to believe it’s been that long ago. Even harder to know that next year, 2024, will be my 30th Anniversary as being an Eagle Scout.

I did landscaping around an annex building of the church I attended as a youth. The building wasn’t being used then. Shortly after, the church started to utilize it.

Once an Eagle Scout, Always an Eagle Scout

The first Eagle Scout award was given in 1912. The Eagle Scout rank was introduced shortly after the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) was founded in 1910. The inaugural Eagle Scout award was presented to Arthur R. Eldred on August 21, 1912. Eldred had successfully completed the necessary requirements and demonstrated exceptional leadership, outdoor skills, and community service, setting the precedent for future Eagle Scouts to come. Since then, the Eagle Scout rank has become a symbol of achievement and distinction within the scouting community.

“Once an Eagle Scout, Always an Eagle Scout” is a motto that reflects the enduring spirit and commitment of individuals who have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout within the Boy Scouts of America. The rank of Eagle Scout is the highest achievement attainable in the scouting program, representing the culmination of years of dedication, leadership, and service.

The phrase signifies that the values and principles instilled during one’s journey to becoming an Eagle Scout stay with them throughout their lives. It signifies an ongoing commitment to the ideals of scouting, such as integrity, loyalty, preparedness, and a dedication to serving others. Eagle Scouts continue to embody these qualities and apply them in their personal and professional endeavors long after they have earned the rank.

The impact of being an Eagle Scout extends beyond the scouting experience. The skills and lessons learned during the journey to Eagle, including leadership, teamwork, goal-setting, and problem-solving, equip individuals with a strong foundation for success in various aspects of life. The sense of responsibility, community engagement, and the desire to make a positive difference are values that Eagle Scouts carry forward throughout their lives.

Moreover, the network of Eagle Scouts forms a community of individuals who share a common bond and understanding of the scouting experience. This network provides a support system and opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and lifelong learning. Eagle Scouts often find themselves engaged in leadership roles, both within the scouting organization and in their communities, as they continue to contribute their skills and expertise to the betterment of society.

In essence, the phrase “Once an Eagle Scout, Always an Eagle Scout” serves as a reminder that the values and experiences gained as an Eagle Scout continue to shape and influence individuals, guiding them to be honorable, responsible, and dedicated citizens. It represents a lifelong commitment to service, leadership, and making a positive impact on the world.
